Can You Mount a TV Above a Fireplace?

Short answer: yes — most of the time. But it's one of the most involved TV mounting jobs we do, and it's worth understanding what's behind the wall (and the mantel) before you commit.

Here's our honest take on TVs above fireplaces, from the many we've mounted around Granbury and Weatherford.

Why Fireplace Walls Are the Toughest in the House

Three things make a fireplace wall complicated:

The wall surface. Many Granbury fireplaces are stone or brick. Drilling into masonry takes different anchors and different tools than drywall — done right, it's just as secure, but it's slower, dustier work.

The height. A mantel usually puts the bottom of your TV at eye level or higher before you've made a single decision. Mounting "above the fireplace" almost always means mounting above comfortable viewing height. Our article on how high to mount a TV covers why that matters for your neck.

The heat. Electronics and heat don't get along. A TV sitting directly above a fireplace takes in rising warm air every time the fire's lit.

Is the Heat Actually a Problem?

It depends on your fireplace. If the mantel sticks out well beyond the TV and the fireplace is mostly decorative or used occasionally, heat is usually a non-issue. If the TV sits close to the opening, the mantel is shallow, or you run hot fires all winter, heat becomes a real consideration.

A simple, honest test: tape a thermometer where the TV would go, run a normal fire, and see what the temperature reads. If that spot gets noticeably hot to the touch, the TV shouldn't live there — or the setup needs rethinking.

Getting the Wiring Right

Even in a stone fireplace wall, wires can usually be concealed — through a paintable raceway that matches the stone, or inside the wall if the structure allows. Nothing undercuts a beautiful fireplace install like a bundle of dangling cables.

Our Honest Recommendation

Before we drill into anyone's fireplace, we ask one question: is there a better wall in the room? Sometimes there is — and a TV on that wall at the right height beats a TV over the fireplace at the wrong one, every time.

If the fireplace is the right spot (and often it is — it's usually the visual center of the room), we'll make it work: a tilt mount to help with the viewing angle, masonry-rated anchors, concealed cables, and honest advice about the heat.
