How High Should a Soundbar Be Mounted?

A soundbar sitting on a media console is fine. A soundbar mounted at the right height, level with your TV, with no visible wires — that's a finished room.
But "at the right height" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Here's our rule of thumb, from the many soundbars we've mounted in Granbury and Weatherford living rooms.
The Short Answer
Directly below the TV, centered, as close to the bottom edge of the screen as clearance allows.
When the TV is mounted at proper viewing height (center of the screen at seated eye level — about 40 to 42 inches, per our TV height guide), the soundbar lands naturally just below it. That keeps the sound anchored to the picture: when dialogue comes from a voice on screen, it should sound like it's coming from the screen — not from your ankles and not from the ceiling.
Why "Below" Beats "Above"
- Sound should come from where you're looking. Below the screen keeps the audio tied to the picture
- Tweeters like ear level. High-frequency sound (the detail in dialogue) travels in a straight line — the lower the soundbar sits, the less it bounces off the ceiling on its way to your ears
- Above the TV only makes sense when there's no room below — a mantel install, or a console that's too shallow. Then the rule flips: center the bar above the screen and keep it tight to the top edge
Three Things to Check Before Drilling
IR and remote clearance. Don't bury the soundbar's remote sensor behind the TV's bottom edge or a shelf lip — you'll be waving the remote like a wizard within a week.
Vent clearance. Soundbars run warm. A couple of inches of breathing room above and behind keeps the electronics happy.
The wall-mount kit. Most soundbars ship with brackets designed for wall mounting — or there's an aftermarket kit for your model. Screwing through the bar itself is not a mounting system. (Yes, we've seen it.)
The Cables Make or Break It
A soundbar mounted two feet from the TV with a visible HDMI cable drooping between them is the unfinished-room giveaway. In most walls we route the wiring behind the drywall so the wall reads as one clean setup — TV, soundbar, nothing else. On trickier walls, a paintable raceway gets 90% of the look for 10% of the effort.
The Bottom Line
Soundbar height is a small decision with an outsized effect on how finished the whole wall looks — and sounds. If you want it done in one visit alongside your TV, that's exactly how we do it.
