Wall Hanging
Floating Shelf Installation in Granbury, Texas

A floating shelf is a beautiful thing: no visible brackets, no clunky hardware, just a clean slab of wood floating on the wall. Right up until it starts to sag, tilt, or peel itself away from the drywall — which is exactly what happens when the shelf was hung on hardware that couldn't carry the load.
Here's what actually holds a floating shelf up, and how we install them in Granbury homes so they stay level for the long haul.
Why Floating Shelves Sag
The "floating" look means all the weight hangs on hidden hardware — usually rods or a hidden bracket the shelf slides onto. That hardware is doing structural work with zero visible support, so it has exactly two failure modes:
Weak anchoring. The rods go into drywall with small anchors instead of into studs (or solid backing). The shelf holds a few picture frames... until someone puts books on it, and the anchors slowly work loose. Gravity is patient.
Wrong shelf for the wall. Every hidden-rod system has a weight rating and a rod count. A heavy solid-wood shelf needs more rods, deeper anchors, and stouter backing than the MDF kit from the big-box store.
The Fix: Anchor to Structure, Not Drywall
For shelves that will hold real weight — books, dishes, baskets, garage storage — we anchor into one of three things:
- Studs, wherever the layout allows
- Solid wood backing spanning the studs, when stud placement doesn't line up with where the shelves need to be
- Heavy-duty rated anchors, for lighter décor shelves on open drywall spans
The difference between a shelf that sags in year one and one that's still dead level in year ten is almost always this one decision.
Layout Matters Too
Floating shelves are as much a design decision as a hardware one. A few rules we work by:
- Level lines, checked twice. A 1-degree tilt is invisible on a bracket shelf and glaring on a floating one
- Spacing in even multiples. Shelves read best when the gaps between them match
- Plan for the stuff, not just the shelf. Decide what's going on them first — then hang them at heights that fit the vases, books, or baskets you actually own
Where Floating Shelves Earn Their Keep
In Granbury homes we install them all over: flanking a mounted TV in the living room (a great alternative to a media console), bathroom storage, kitchen coffee stations, kids' rooms, and garage organization where wall-mounted storage frees up the floor.
The Bottom Line
A floating shelf install is quick work when it's done right — level, anchored to structure, and rated for what you'll actually put on it. Sagging and tilting aren't bad luck; they're bad anchoring.
