How Long Does It Take to Mount a TV? Honest Timelines for Every Job

"How long will it take?" is usually the second question people ask about TV mounting — right after "how much?" — and the honest answer is more useful than a single number, because "mounting a TV" covers jobs that take forty minutes and jobs that take half a day.

Here's the breakdown we give homeowners in Granbury and Weatherford, job type by job type, including what adds time and what you can do to keep the appointment short.

The Short Answer

A standard TV mount — drywall wall, studs in the right places, no cable concealment — runs about 45 to 90 minutes from door to done. That includes finding the studs, setting the height, hanging the bracket, mounting and leveling the TV, and a quick hook-up of your sources.

Most other jobs are that, plus extras. The timeline grows with the wall, the wires, and the TV's size — not with our speed. Here's the full menu.

Standard Wall Mount: 45–90 Minutes

The baseline job, and the most common one in the area's newer builds: drywall over wood studs, TV under 65 inches, mount in hand, cables staying outside the wall.

The clock looks like this:

  • Wall check and stud finding — 10 to 15 minutes. We mark stud centers, confirm the mounting height, and dry-fit the placement before anything permanent happens. Rushed measuring is where crooked and too-high installs come from.
  • Bracket install — 10 to 20 minutes. Level, lag bolts to the studs, torque-checked.
  • TV hang and level — 10 to 15 minutes. Big TVs are two-person work, always.
  • Hook-up and cleanup — 10 to 20 minutes. Sources connected, picture checked, packing materials out of your living room.

That's the honest arithmetic behind "about an hour" — and why a quote that promises twenty minutes is a quote that hasn't measured anything yet.

Add Cable Concealment: +30–60 Minutes

Routing the wires inside the wall is the single most requested add-on, and the single biggest visual upgrade. On a standard interior drywall wall, it adds roughly 30 to 60 minutes: cut the pass-through openings, drop the low-voltage lines, install the plates, patch nothing (the plates cover the cuts).

Two things change the math. Exterior walls — insulation and sometimes fire blocking — can turn a quick drop into a slow one or rule it out entirely. And masonry walls don't take in-wall routing at all; those get a paintable raceway instead, which is fast.

Stone or Brick Fireplace Wall: 1.5–3 Hours

The stone fireplace install is the most requested "tricky" job in our part of Texas, and it takes the longest of the common installs for honest reasons:

  • Masonry drilling is slower than wood — hammer drill, masonry anchors, and dust control.
  • Placement gets mapped to the wall's solid spots, not slid around to suit the mount.
  • Heat and clearance get checked before the holes go in.
  • Cable concealment, when the wall allows it, is a raceway or channel — not an in-wall drop.

A stone install done right is a patient job. A stone install done in forty minutes is usually one we get called to re-do.

Large TVs (75 Inch and Up): +30–45 Minutes

Bigger screens don't just weigh more — they multiply everything: heavier mount hardware, two-person handling at every step, a sizing and height decision with less margin for error, and more wall real estate that has to cooperate with the studs. A 75-inch on a straightforward wall usually lands around the 90-minute mark; an 85-inch on a stone wall is a genuine half-day candidate. (More on the big ones: 75-inch and 85-inch.)

Full-Motion Mounts: +15–30 Minutes

Articulating mounts take a bit longer than fixed — more hardware, more torque on the joints, and anchor placement matters more because an extended arm multiplies force on the wall. Worth it in the rooms that need the swing; not worth rushing anywhere.

Soundbar Mounting: +20–30 Minutes

Adding a mounted soundbar below the TV is quick work when it's planned with the TV mount — one appointment, one cable plan. Retrofitting one later takes longer, which is why we suggest deciding about audio before the first hole is drilled.

What Makes Jobs Take Longer (Honestly)

In our experience around Granbury and Weatherford, these are the things that stretch a timeline:

  • Surprise walls — plaster and lath in the older homes near the squares, metal studs in some newer builds, or walls with surprises behind them. None are dealbreakers; all take care.
  • Missing or wrong hardware — a mount with the wrong VESA plate for the TV. Worth checking before the appointment, not during it.
  • Undecided placement — the best installs start with a decided height and wall. When a homeowner wants to see the TV in two spots, we'll happily do it — that's a conversation before drilling, and it adds time on purpose. (Our TV height guide usually settles it.)

How to Keep Your Appointment Short

Three things genuinely speed up a job: know the TV size and wall before booking, have the mount on-site (or tell us to bring one), and decide where the couch actually lives — mounting height follows the seating, not the other way around. Ready rooms mean the whole job often lands at the short end of the range.

The Bottom Line

Standard mount: about an hour. Add cables, stone, or a very big screen and it grows — honestly, and quoted up front. Whatever the timeline, the job ends the same way: level, anchored into studs or masonry, wires handled, and a TV that looks like it grew there.
